Dynamical spectrogram, an aid for the deaf
نویسندگان
چکیده
Visual perception of speech through spectrogram reading has long been a subject of research, as an aid for the deaf or hearing impaired. Attributing the lack of success in this type of visual aids mainly to the static form of information presented by the spectrograms, this paper proposes a system of dynamic visualisation for speech sounds. This system samples a high resolved, auditorybased spectrogram, with a window of 20 milliseconds duration, so that exploiting the periodicity of the input sound, it produces a phase-locked sequence of images. This sequence is then animated at a rate of 50 images per second to produce a movie-like image displaying both the time-varying and time-independent information of the underlying sound. Results of several preliminary experiments for evaluation of the potential usefulness of the system for the deaf, undertaken by normal-hearing subjects, support the quick learning and persistence of the gestures for small sets of single words and motivate further investigations.

Vibrotactile Detection, Identification and Directional Perception of signal-Processed Sounds from Environmental Events: A Pilot Field Evaluation in Five Cases
Objectives: Conducting field tests of a vibrotactile aid for deaf/deafblind persons for detection, identification and directional perception of environmental sounds. Methods: Five deaf (3F/2M, 22–36 years) individuals tested the aid separately in a home environment (kitchen) and in a traffic environment. Their eyes were blindfolded and they wore a headband and holding a vibrator for sound id...

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the impact of using multimedia training on learning science in deaf learners. So, thirty deaf learners of the sixth grade of exceptional schools in provinces of Tehran state were chosen through a multi-stage cluster sampling approach and they were examined in two groups of experiment and control. In order to investigate, the final test was used in...
متن کاملBilingual Education and Necessity to Differentiate Two Educational Challenges for Deaf Students
Background: Some obstacles and inefficiencies in deaf education system may be attributed to the fact that the right to education and equality of opportunities for national core curriculum, and the need for learning Farsi language are not met separately among deaf students. In fact, the distinction between these two educational challenges is not addressed to deaf pupils in particular. Based on t...
متن کاملDynamical Spectrograms That Can Be Perceived as Visual Gestures
A new system for speech visualisation, has been implemented to allow deaf and hearing-impaired people to understand verbal information over channels such as the ordinary public telephone system. Incorporating a computational model of the human ear, the system converts incoming sounds into a sequence of animated images, which show the temporal variations of the spectral pattern of the input soun...
متن کاملCipher text only attack on speech time scrambling systems using correction of audio spectrogram
Recently permutation multimedia ciphers were broken in a chosen-plaintext scenario. That attack models a very resourceful adversary which may not always be the case. To show insecurity of these ciphers, we present a cipher-text only attack on speech permutation ciphers. We show inherent redundancies of speech can pave the path for a successful cipher-text only attack. To that end, regularities ...
